This story has been updated to reflect that Michigan State had a medical school top one of the specialty rankings.
A number of Michigan university medical schools were featured in this year’s U.S. News & World Report rankings, with a notable exception.
The rankings released Tuesday, July 23, do not include the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, which ranked No. 17 in the nation in the 2023 rankings. The Ann Arbor school opted to not submit data for the rankings this year, so U.S. News and World Report did not include them on rankings using recent data.
The rankings include Best Medical Schools for Research and Best Medical Schools for Primary Care. The methodology weighed faculty resources, academic achievement of incoming students, medical research grants, graduate placement and practice in primary care fields.
Wayne State University in Detroit is the only Michigan university to appear on both research and primary care rankings. It was considered a tier 3 school on both lists, which consisted of four tiers each.
Another specialty list ranks universities by how many graduates practice in rural areas. Multiple Michigan universities featured on this list, led by Michigan State University College of Human Medicine at No. 38 nationally with 7% of its graduates practicing in rural areas.
Central Michigan University was next on the list at No. 43 at more than 6%, while Oakland University ranked No. 55 at over 5%. Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine was just behind at No. 58.
Wayne State ranked No. 87 at 3.7%.
The Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine earned the No. 1 ranking in the nation for the medical school with the most graduates practicing in areas experiencing a health professional shortage.
Since the rankings used data from 2015-17, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor was included. It ranked No. 119 at just more than 2%.
While its medical school was not represented on the primary care or research rankings, University of Michigan-Health in Ann Arbor tied for first in the state, according to U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Hospitals” rankings for 2024-25.
