An Excessive Heat Warning includes the entire Kansas City Metro and much of Kansas from 1 PM Monday until 7 PM Thursday, with a Heat Advisory for the rest of Missouri. Heat index values ranging from 105 to 110 degrees are likely, with overnight heat index values staying above 80 degrees. This will likely end up being our hottest week of the year when it comes to heat index in Kansas City.
I’ve been talking for a while now about how relatively mild July and most of this summer has been, temperature wise and rainfall wise. We haven’t seen anything like last year, when we set a heat index record at Kansas City International Airport of 118° on August 20.
This meteorological summer so far (June 1 – now), is one of three with below normal high temperatures in the last decade. 2015 and 2019 were also below normal through the end of July. That will likely change this week with our highest heat index numbers of the year…so far KCI has hit 107°. The airport could get up to 110° heat index, most likely on either Tuesday or Wednesday.
A reminder that heat is by far the most deadly weather across the United States. Stay safe if you have to work outdoors by taking extra breaks in the shade or air conditioning, along with staying hydrated. Keep a close eye on sensitive groups including children, the elderly, and animals. Overnight feels like temperatures in the 80s will not allow for much cooling off during the overnight.
